You want me to kiss your ass
well bend over buddy here comes my foot
I don't need your cryin' and shit
temper's risin' take a fit

bite it you scum
bite it you scum
bite it you scum, here I come
bite it you scum

I believe these lyrics have much social and societal importance in todays modern times. I personally have them written down and I keep them in my wallet, and I look at them, when times get rough.

There's so many... for starters:

Chimes Of Freedom (probably my favorite if I had to pick just one)
Mr. Bojangles
Jungleland
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Powderfinger
Both Sides Now

"For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...
Always look on the bright side of death,
[whistling]
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
[whistling]
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke. It's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you"

I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don't know
I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
The light on your door to show that you're home
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty that you are
But if you don't let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I'll be your mirror

This one has always cut me up deep... ever since I was a little kid, perfect - so relatable, not a wasted word, and such fabulous imagery.

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)

brief instrumental-chiefly strings

At night the stars put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me

I keep a-tellin' you

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, baby (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, honey (up on the roof)

I have a tape of my friend’s dad singing “Up on the Roof”. Just him and a guitar. Very touching rendition.

Bubba, that sounds really interesting. I love when a song is covered nicely, completely outside and differently from the way you're used to hearing it.

For that reason I've enjoyed the new Patti Smith covers record.

Good mornin' mornin' glory
Good mornin' what's your story
Good mornin' where'd you spend the night
Where did your night dreams take you
Sorry but I had to wake you
Oh I just had to make you
Shed your precious mornin' light on me
Oh good mornin' sleepy baby
You know, I'm thinking maybe
I love you even more today
Every time you go to sleep
I'm jealous of the dreams
That keep you away from me
Good mornin' mornin' glory
I'll have to thank the sandman
For he's let you wake up in my arms again
Doo doo da doo doo doo doo
Oh, come on darling time to get up
I have your breakfast table set up
Its such a lovely morning to see
And I have my mornin' glory with me.

Seeing that i'm on a bit of a Neutral Milk Hotel thing at the moment - i nominate "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea";

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

Beautiful eh?

Hey Luther, nice one with the Fiery Furnaces choice. Loved them from day one, the lyrics being so different from more or less everything new i was hearing. Good story telling with surrealistic twists. Sure Dylan inspired, but they get close to his genius (in my opinion), not many do!

I could go for another NMH, too, for that matter. How about King of Carrot Flowers, pt I?

When you were young, you were the king of carrot flowers.
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees,
in holy rattlesnakes that fell all 'round your feet.

And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder,
and dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
as we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for.

And this is the room, one afternoon, I knew I could love you;
and from above you, how I sank into your soul,
into that secret place where no one dares to go.

And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking,
and dad would dream of all the different ways to die--
each one a little more than he could dare to try.

That was just a great choice. I've quoted those I love the most. You'd never believe how often I find myself thinking or singing these lyrics. I hope Jeff Mangum releases another album of his own songs someday soon.
