I've spent the evening clearing space on my hard drive as I was down to 85Mb free out of 160Gb!!!!! I've ordered a new external 400Gb drive but Amazon haven't even shipped it yet! I knew I should have gone for the paid delivery....

As soon as I get some space I will be back here in a flash!!!!!!

My tale of harddrive woe: My 300 GB seagate external drive appears to be failing. It will spin up and is recognized by the computer, but then seems to just shut down (power light goes out) and all of the folders say that they are empty when I try to access them. If I click on "properties" the drive still says that there is 8 GB available out of 296 or whatever the actual total is, so I'm hoping that the files are still there somehow. I'm also getting a repeated error message that there is a "delayed write failure" to some strange file on that drive, and that it may be caused by a hardware failure. The drive contains about 2 years worth of music and video downloads, so I'm pretty upset about it. Fortunately most (but not all) of my live EC shows are on a different drive.

I remember Jeff having similar problems a while back but he managed to save his somehow.

I think I would cry if that happened after i'd amassed all that....so it'll probably happen to me too at some stage!

Hope you sort it out OK!

Are these external drives dodgier than the normal ones then?

I have come very close to crying, but instead I've been trying not to think about it, and our 12 week old is good at distracting me. I have two external drives, the Seagate and a Teac. The Teac is 3 years old (160GB), and still going strong. The Seagate is only a little less than 2 years old, but it has made somewhat alarming sounds from the beginning. I know that I should back-up every thing, but that would require the purchase of a 500GB drive just to do backups, and I probably would stop using it for backups and just fill it up with new stuff.

My entire Beatles Ebbetts collection is on that Seagate drive (as well as the Dylan Ebbetts, Complete Sea of Tunes in FLAC, Dylan's Jewels and Binoculars, etc.). ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

First off, sorry to hear about that drive.

Having said that.....

Whoa.

You know that thrill you get when you KNOW you have heard a New Favorite Album for the first time? Like I got with Notorious Byrd Brothers, or Village Green, or Unhalfbricking?

I got it again today.

After listening to you all talk a little bit about the Elvis Costello remaster situation, I was killing time at Best Buy waiting for my family earlier. I saw side by side in the same bin both the 2 CD and the new remaster of My Aim Is True. I figured that I wasn't likely to see the 2 CD version again, and they were basically the same price, so I decided to go ahead and pick it up.

Oh, my.

This is what minimalist music should sound like. This is awesome. I especially dug Allison, but wow. And this is also Huey Lewis and the News in essence? What happened there?

I think I am in love with this music. I have already played it twice today.

Love that album, though the music is too uptown for me. I like The Attractions a lot more. Only one member of the News is on there.

I'm really glad you like that album, Jeff. I had a feeling that you might like that one better than the Attractions albums that were recommended as starters. Aim is the album that made me a fan, and i think the performances are great. I kind of had the same reaction when I heard it the first time: WHOA! Completely different sound from the Attractions (the Attractions are much tighter and have a sharper edge), but I still love it. And what amazing songs for a debut album. And now you have his whole amazing catalog to check out. I kind of envy you experiencing all of that great music for the first time.

The lore has always been that Clover (the band backing Elvis on that album) were Huey Lewis and the News, but i believe Ian and Andy if they say that only one of the News are on the album.

Consider grabbing one of the live shows from this thread. I think you'll really like them.

I have more uploads planned.

Thanks for these live shows - i can't get enough of the El Mocambo cd and i can't wait to hear more!

Well, considering it was only 98 cents on Amazon, I ordered a copy. After Aim, I have to hear the whole deal.

Yay Jeff. "Aim" ain't anywhere near his best.

I've been listening to lots of "This Year's Model" lately.

Yes it is. It is probably not his absolute best album, but it is certainly among his very best.

It's very dry sounding to me, the songs need Nieve.

It's the principle of the thing -- having an actual copy just sits better with me if I actually plan on listening to it. I went and bought most of the Fairport catalog once I started listening to the MP3s relentlessly. Eventually I will probably get the rest of the 2CD sets.
