Westmalle, Orval, Chimay, Westvleteren, are four of the five or six state-licensed Belgian original monastery beers. All are tops. Orval is by far the lightest and has a special taste that needs getting used to. Westvleteren has a special status: you can buy it in the shops at a decent price and that is already stunningly good. But the monastery releases every year a limited quantity label-less of it, in crates, which can only be bought at the holy chapel itself. Needless to say, on D-Day (or W-Day?) a queue of vans has formed to grab those special delights. And contrary to the quite psychiatric queue some days ago for the iPhone, this type of queue has intent and meaning and a real goal...
I don't know what a Westmalle costs in the USA. In Europe it sells for about Euro 1.20, which converts to $ 0.90. Just to make you jealous.

Ya gotta watch out for that shit that the Monks make... It'll fuck you up!
Also, nothing like paying $8/$10 for a bottle of beer- Chimay that is.
Sooooo tasty! Yum!

I was in a beer emporium on Long Island on Wednesday and asked for DT. The guy said it would be in in Friday, and someone else had been in in the last day or two asking for same. So...who's in East Northport?!

Due to quite an intake on the 4th, I am doing my best not to think about beer at the moment. But posting in this thread probably didn't help that cause.

Thanks for the tip about Bell's. There are a couple of distributors in my area that carry it, now I need to find a retailer. One of the better local micro breweries in my area is Sprecher's, which is located in Beertown, Wisconsin (that would be Milwaukee to most of you folks). Sprechers makes a variety if brews including a Hefe Weiss, an English style Pub Ale, and they even make a damn fine Root Beer. One of my favorites, though, is this Black Bavarian Kulmbacher style lager. Very dark, smooth, and creamy. Yum. Also very potent with 5.86% alcohol by volume. TGIF.

Yeah, man! Get de Bells. The Double Cream Stout is the most amazing brew ever.

I've seen Sprecher... but not that one! Looks like an Alt of some sort. Delish!

I'm cheating by posting on this thread, I haven't read it yet (while, in fact, I have had a beer or two on an occasion), but I thought I'd drop in to note that I've just opened and swiftly consumed the first can in a case of this:

I can report that its 8% alcohol content and distinct chocolate-ness makes for a very satisfying libation. Now I really must go before my words begin te slkdj.

Sacrilege to put good beer in a can!
For shame!

Ok, here's what the side of the can says (either the can is shaking, or my eyeballs are, but I'll get through it):
We've heard cans are made for boring, pusillanimous beer. We couldn't agree less. Old Chub is a behemoth of a beer brewed in the tradition of the finest Scottish style ales. We brew it with huge quantities of caramel and chocolate malt, and a touch of smoked malt. Our liquid philanthropy is your 12-ounce snub to conformity.

Ok, damnit, I was planning not to drink anything tonight. And now I seem to be very, very close to giving in.

As usual.

But I think it'll be a bottle of wine tonight. And thus this post is in the wrong thread.

Also as usual.

OLD CHUB?

Man, my local beer vendors really lack. I must move.

I disagree. Cans leave no taste of their own, in fact the 'draft Guiness' can is a superb invention to bring the authentic taste to life.

I think, in fact, the old-style can did impart a metallic taste, and that's where the bad rep comes from. The interiors of the cans are coated now, and I think they have been for some years.

I'm not sure you can blame the Old Style can for the putrid taste. I think the beer itself is responsible. Very Happy
