I once had a neil show on cassette that had one of the most powerful musical utterances I ever heard...a killer live Down By The River that knocked me on my ass...and when I played it for a friend he flipped, and even jerked his head back after hearing the first seconds. Whoever made me the tape didn't write a date or anything on the tape, and I lost this tape!!!!!

Anyways, it sounded like a mid-nineties tour show, probably from 96 or 97...Crazy Horse was the back up of course. The sound reminescent of the Year of the Horse vibe.

I would love to hear a live comp from this particular era that included Down By The River, along with Big Time, SLip Away, Cowgirl in the Sand...since those are my favorite Neil songs.

Even better perhaps, would be a comp with various Down By THe River performances over the years to compare and study and rock to...I could really get into that...and then write an overview of these performances.

It is perhaps my favorite rock song...it is Neil's "Ninth Symphony" in a sense.

I'll bet that Down By The River was the one from Farm Aid in 96 or so. It was a soundboard version, right?

Yes it was, if I remember correctly.

Cool, I'll upload that as a separate file for you right now. In my opinion, the best Crazy Horse performance I have heard.

The unbelievably intense Down By The River from Farm Aid 94. If you dig Crazy Horse, grab this and play immediately. You won't believe it.

A taster of this forthcoming treat, of which Disc 1 shall be up shortly:

Capture The Horse
created by
Mark Dubbeldam

General information

This is a new compilation, result of the hard work of Mark Dubbeldam. I know how long he has been working on this project - and the result shows how careful he did it. Although it is a huge compilation - 12 discs audio - I certainly would say that not only the many Neil Young and Crazy Horse fans should get this!

Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse - 'Capture The Horse': Mark's introduction

Some of you might remember one or two posts on this topic in the past. It was about a compilation of every song that Neil played with Crazy Horse, ever.
From developing the idea to creating the discs, artwork, took (and takes) about 10 months. The result is a 12 CD compilation containing 148 songs running over 900 minutes.

The process was carried out as follows: first everything was recorded (analog) from CD to MiniDisc. On MD, all was checked, corrected and finally, transferred digitally back to CDR. I had to do it this way because I have a stand alone burner and none in my PC.

After that (I think by the time of June) it was send out to Harm Beltman who converted everything to shn and gave the first verdict on the quality. Harm managed to put a great effort into it and came up with the shn sources. I would like to take this opportunity and thank Harm for his work. Without his help, this would have never reached this stage.

Well, just a couple of short notes before I leave you with the tracklist. The 12 single CD artwork are all set up with a front-inside cover and a separate back cover for each disc. The inside contains the detailed recording data per song and has some Neil/ Crazy Horse related symbolism pictures in the background.

Furthermore, the compilation was set up chronologically. Two exceptions though: Oh Lonesome Me and Bright Sunny Day were placed as last songs on their individual discs because of the crappy sound they were available in. Another note is that there is one song on the compilation from which it is debatable if it was played together with the Horse or by Neil solo. This is The Needle AND The Damage Done from Barrie- 1996. The last song, Greensleeves is the outro of the compilation and is a continuation of Imagine, which apparently was played as a band instrumental. I decided not to cut Greensleeves out of it because I thought it was an appropriate ending of the compilation.

Thanks to Sugar Mountain, HyperRust, Numbers on the Site, Taper's Almanac, HeyHeyMyMy and Neil Covers for all info on setlists, tracklists etc.

Last but not least I would like to thank all of you that traded with me, were on the lookout for shows and helped me out on information surrounding this compilation. Without disregarding all others, Peter Denut deserves a special thanks. But many thanks to all of you indeed!

Artwork to follow.

Some remarks on known problems of some tracks, made by Mark:

There are some flaws on these tracks. Here are the flaws known to us:

CD 1: 1970-1975
1) THE LONER-3:32
There’s a couple of edits in this song. These are known edits. Apparently there is a clean version in circulation now but I was not aware of that when I finished this compilation.

3) DOWN BY THE RIVER-18:58
Including the edit that was present in the master.

14) OH LONESOME ME-3:46
Unclear, distant sound. Known fact of this recording. No known other sources. One of two non chronological exceptions on this compilation.

CD 2: 1976-1978
Noticeable variations in the recording level on this disc. Only between different songs though. Not in the songs themselves.

13) BITE THE BULLET-3:42
Not sure, but I think I might have heard some minor diginoise in here.

16) BRIGHT SUNNY DAY-3:58
Unclear, distant sound. Known fact of this recording. No known other sources. One of two non chronological exceptions on this compilation.

CD 3: 1984-1986
Noticeable variations in the recording level on this disc. Only between different songs though. Not in the songs themselves.

9) BAD NEWS BEAT-4:05
Known ‘electricity’ noise present in the background. Faded out as much as possible.

CD 4: 1987

10) NAME OF LOVE-5:48
Bass too strong in the opening seconds of the song.

12) AIN'T IT THE TRUTH-3:56
I tried to get this recording up to par on someone else’s computer. The result is a much improved, but somewhat artificial sound.

CD 5: 1990-1991
Couple of very short diginoise moments in the 11/13/90 songs. Relatively much hiss in the 1991 songs.

CD 6: 1994-1995

11) WESTERN HERO-4:17
‘Electricity’ noise present in the background.

CD 7: 1996 (1)

Cool LOOSE CHANGE-9:25
Not sure, but I think I might have heard some minor diginoise in here.

CD 8: 1996 (2)
Noticeable variations in the recording level on this disc. Only between different songs though. Not in the songs themselves.

1) SLIP AWAY-15:51
You might think you hear crackles or diginoise in this song but I’m pretty positive that in fact it’s someone nearby the taper who crackles a paper bag or something.

CD 9: 1997 (1)

CD 10: 1997 (2)

7) LOVE TO BURN-14:07
Very short diginoise at 10.40 in this song.

CD 11: 2001 (1)

3) LIKE A HURRICANE #2-15:27
‘Electricity’ noise present in the background.

CD 12: 2001 (2)

12) IMAGINE/ GREENSLEEVES-7:58
At the end of this song, there’s noise around the taper. Because of the outro of Greensleeves I left this in on purpose.

Aww, you're all gonna love this (if you dig Neil and Horse, that is).

The unbelievably intense Down By The River from Farm Aid 94. If you dig Crazy Horse, grab this and play immediately. You won't believe it.

Fuck, I was there! Farm Aid 1994 at the New Orleans Superdome. Paula Poundstone was the act before Neil and Crazy Horse. In the middle of some lame joke you hear Neil plug in Old Black from behind the curtain. Paula didn't stand a chance after that. All Along The Watchtower was really intense. Neil sang "two riders were approaching" for 5 minutes while wrenching all holy hell out of his guitar..

Man, that's so great! I would have loved to have been there! I was, however, at the shows Weld was recorded at.
