Who should a music critic be? What should a music critic do? Why should a music critic do what s/he does? And when should a music critic do what s/he does?

There are people who want critics to create their tastes and others who want them to affirm previously existing tastes. There are those who want sneak previews, and others who want historical resources. Some want compelling writing, others just want some comparisons by which they can shop. Some would prefer a reviewer to be a musician, others focus more on the writing itself.

What is for you the most useful, ideal role for a music critic?
