So, has anyone seen this yet? I just got back from its performance as part of the Manchester International Festival. It was mind-blowing. I've never seen Lou before and i was surprised at how totally in control he was, bossing his band about mid-song, leading them in extended jams, generally glaring at them... I think it might be because the only other sit-down "playing the album from start to finish" thing i've been to was Smile and so i'd linked it with that in my mind. This was a hell of a contrast, though no less celebratory.

There was Lou with a 6 or 7 piece band, plus a children's choir and 8 members of the London Symphony Orchestra (i think). It was just like the album, except more slow and deliberate in the slow and deliberate bits and faster and rockier in the fast, rocky bits. Great short films playing in the background for each song too - it was hard not to get caught up in them and forget about the band.

It was a total blast, though there were a couple of points where it got so intense that i thought i was going to faint, or something. The crying in The Kids was unbelievably harrowing. I half-thought it wouldn't be included as it'd be a weird thing to recreate onstage. But, they just blasted the recording instead. A woman next to me started crying instantly and at least 20 people in front of me walked out during, or at the end of, the song. What were they expecting? I'd barely recovered from that when we were assaulted by the swooping, deathly choirs at the end of The Bed. It was like the musical equivalent of the climax of a Hubert Selby novel.

Then we got band introductions and a bit of banter - Lou seemed in a really good mood and the atmosphere was suddenly as friendly as a BW show.

Encores: Sweet Jane (with trumpets - somehow it worked), Satellite Of Love (this was really protracted with the bassist, the female lead singer and the kids choir all taking verses - again though, it worked) and lastly Walk On The Wild Side which i really wasn't expecting. They stretched it out for 10 minutes or so and everyone left happy, but maybe with some slightly stranger stuff in their brain than they woke up with this morning.

In short: Go and see Berlin - it's well worth your money - but don't blame me if every other gig you see looks a bit rubbish in comparison Very Happy

I'm seeing it in London tonight (and tommorrow!), and I'll report back once I've got my head around it.

Thanks MoonDroog for making me even more excited by the upcoming evening.

You can still find a copy of his New York debut of Berlin (as opposed to his Berlin debut of New York....)

at http://nargothebortsdeviantsubculture.blogspot.com/

I know it appeared somewhere else about the day after it happened but for those that didn't grab it then, now's your chance!

There are TOO MANY good shows at that site! Let's all discover it now before it goes legal. Thanks for the pointer.

I recommend downloading the Replacements '84 CBGBs gigs there, as those represent the best documentation of the band known to me (including albums). I actually had considered uploading them to the board myself only yesterday.

Well, they're on that site, so I really don't have to. Also, the boot version I have of those shows is at the wrong speed, and the version corrected by me doesn't sound quite right ...

Hmm. Am listening to that show upload ... doesn't sound very good. No bass, very thin. I may put my copy up yet. Been wanting to start a 'Mats thread anyway.
