Firstly, an introduction: Hello folks. I have been around the other site for what, a couple of years now, under various nick names, and was sent this link by Joe just a few minutes ago.

Alright.

I need some help getting into this band - after seeing the movie Festival Express, not going into tremendous detail in my description of, but being utterly swept away firstly by a bloody great rendition of what I later found out was one of their first singles, Don't Ease Me In, on the Toronto leg of the tour.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=U30lZ4OEWao

But not only that, just the vibe that Jerry Garcia gives off, the fact that I have just discovered my Dad, is a dead ringer for Jerry in the above video, his acoustic rendition of what looked like an old religious spiritual on the train, they were clearly a very grounded band at it's core despite all of the "stoner jam band" stereotypes going around about them, I have wanted to get into them for a long time, and now I feel like I've been missing out on a great thing here.

Firstly, don't pay attention to Jerry, I do want to be "eased in"!

Some of the more acoustic based material might help here ?

Should I start off with Live material or the albums ?

Sadly, as far as their discography goes, I am clueless, so we'll be starting at square one here, folks Embarassed

Well, a, lot of their studio albums offer a facet of the band. The live shows kinda bring it all together.

For the acoustic, both ‘Workingman’s Dead’ and ‘American Beauty’ are top notch. Solid, song-based and no long-jams on either.

I know what you mean about Jerry's vibe. I first heard his voice on the track 'Bertha' on what's my first and favourite Dead album, just tited 'Grateful Dead', or known as 'Skull n' Roses', or I think, 'Skull fuck n' roses'. Anyway, his vibe gave off total positivity, and seemed kind of egoless in itself. It was probably that more than anything that kept me listening.

Hello, Hot Burrito, and welcome!!!!!!!!!!

I'd go with American Beauty first. Amazing record, very calm and spiritual.

I was playing American Beauty just last weekend in another attempt to get them.

Still nothing. I have rarely been as bored outside of work...I don't think they are for me. I start losing interest as soon as they start singing. No songs, no melodies....

I know, lots of you love them but I am really am trying and it still sounds dull. Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad

Maybe when i get older...

if, after listening to workingman's dead nothing is kicking in, then you gotta just chalk it up to one o'those things man.

Jon Hunt got me into American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, after I had dismissed them as useless, bloated wankers for years. Great songs, great vibes on those albums. Still dont enjoy much else by them, and live Dead tapes make me want to shoot myself, but those 2 are classics.

Hunt was similarly instrumental in getting me into Anthem of the Sun. There are still a few noodly moments on there, but some really beautiful psych stuff as well. And I like American Beauty and Workingman's a bit as well. I've never heard any live stuff of theirs that really floats my boat (in its untouched form, at least; I know that Anthem contains a lot of assembled/edited live passages). Their style of jamming just leaves me cold; I like to hear a jam build in intensity up to a peak, whereas from what I've heard of them, their jamming style just sort of meanders and doesn't really build much. Maybe I've just heard the wrong live stuff.

Reckoning is a nice live acoustic set.

Morning Dew on that blows my mind. So intense. He's Gone too. Amazing album.

the version of "sugar magnolia" on there too has made the album version completely unnecessary.

Got that too, and Live Dead (they came in a nice box for £6 for the three of them so I'm not out of pocket too much).

Nothing. I know, acquired taste. Never liked beer either (Cider drinker instead). People said I'd get to like it in time, never did. Sad

Yanks don't drink beer anyway. You drink a peculiarly weak form of lager.
I could drink that all week and feel nothing (and taste nothing....) Laughing

Oh i've started it now...the end of the previous Record Room harmony..... Shocked Embarassed Sorry USA!
