Ah yes - I'm looking at it on a very small screen. Good to see you. I decided this was probably a better place for OT music discussions than the Blueboard (although I still post there too.....)

Good to see you here Pete!

Yeah, saw the story about FOPP today - my favourite Record stores - i popped into the Shaftesbury Avenue one every couple of weeks after meetings in central London.

I think they over-expanded. Bugger, they were great. The only place that had a good selection of back catalogue CDs around (well, there are still a few arounf Berwick St but the likes of Virgin and HMV are crap - the first doesn't carry the stock and HMV charge a fortune.)

Could have been a very bad week indeed if this place hadn't opened up!

That's a real shame. I was hoping that they'd set one up here in Newcastle but I guess that's not going to happen now. The other cheap shop Music Zone (not as good but still good for bargains) has already shut down. When I sometimes go to Edinburgh I always stop by the Fopp for booty.
We have a Virgin shop here and I tell you what, you find it hard to buy cd's in there anymore. Only what's in the charts or in a sale. You used to be able browse the A-Z racks but it's all DVD's and Console games now.
Mind you I will say I hardly ever by CD's in a physical shop anymore purely because it's way cheaper on the net. That's what I don't get about Fopp's demise, they were as cheap or cheaper than buying on the net.
I admit I do download stuff illegally sometimes but anything that I download and really like I get on CD, because I like the to have the artwork in my hand and the superior quality.
Bought downloads just don't cut it for me.

Our Music Zone in Liverpool shut down - and then opened up again!

Is it still in St John's shopping centre?

It's near St John's shopping centre, maybe (technically speaking) is part of it. I tend to just think of it as being in Williamson Square next door to the Playhouse Theatre.

Actually, I just walked past it this morning - looks like it's shut down again! (Probably because it was owned by these Fopps people who I'd never heard of before.)

Seems like HMV may be next, or at least will need to restructure in order to survive. As much as i like (legal) downloads and buying cds online, I also like browsing in stores. I was lucjy enough to be in Portland, Oregon recently, a city which seems able to sustain a number of large independent music storss - one way they seem to do this is by having lots of in-store performances by local bands and also by selling second hand discs (something Fopp / HMV / Tower didn't or don't do). I'd be sad to see the total demise of physical stores but it seems to be more or less inevitable...

When I lived in Portland, I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of the Music Millenium store on NW 23rd. They probably had 2 or 3 in-store performances each week, and it wasnt just local bands. Major acts that were coming through town often would do afternoon sets there before their show. I saw some great sets at Millenium.

Yeah, saw that and did a little jump in the air (well, mentally...) as the London shop was the one I frequented most other than the Camden shop.

Bit of a shame for the employees at the other 75 shops though....

But YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing

Haven't the shops closed already though? I mean, technically there'll be those jobs saved for the workforce, but won't the people working there have gone on to pastures new by the time they re-open?

I used the Tottenham Court Road one anyway. Sometimes Camden, which was smaller. I've never actually been to the Covent Garden one.
